Governor's Task Force on Campus Safety
***Governor's Task Force on Campus Safety Report***
Governor Ernie Fletcher established the Governor’s Task Force on College Campus Safety with a charge to conduct a comprehensive review of safety and security standards at Kentucky’s public and private postsecondary institutions.
In his executive order, the governor noted that “safety increasingly is a concern for all of us and it is especially important at our postsecondary education institutions as they have significant numbers of students in residential facilities...”
Governor Fletcher appointed 15 members to the task force and named Gail Minger as chair, a nationally recognized campus safety advocate whose son, Michael Minger, died in a dormitory fire in Kentucky in 1998. Mrs. Minger successfully lobbied the Kentucky 2000 General Assembly for passage of the Michael Minger Act, which requires Kentucky colleges and universities to document and report campus crimes. She also has won recognition for her efforts to have all public college campus residence halls in Kentucky equipped with automatic sprinklers.
The task force members represent a wide range of expertise in law enforcement, fire safety, college administration and campus security. The panel includes both a student representative and a parent.
The group began its work in January 2007 and focused on college and university compliance with building and fire codes and law enforcement to deter serious campus crimes.
